Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn.
–Benjamin Franklin
Over the past couple of years, I have started attending blog conferences trying to learn how to improve my writing and my photography skills. I’ve been to large group lectures, small group discussions, demonstrations, and hands on workshops. I get a lot of great information from the lectures and discussions, but the lessons that really sink in come from the workshops and from immediately incorporating what I have learned.
I have been fortunate to have developed relationships with professionals in the field, constantly learning from their work, comparing my work to theirs, and ever seeking to improve. In many ways, they have become mentors to me, whether they know it or not. I find that attending the conferences just keeps rekindling my energy for the work. Blogging and food photography can be lonely endeavors and it’s very easy to get discouraged. When you surround yourself with other people who share your passions, it’s easy to get reinvigorated.
I’m thankful for those conferences and for those individuals who push me to be better.
Throughout November, I’ll be posting about those things for which I am most thankful this year. Look for more of my Giving Thanks series all month long.
