Today, I’m giving thanks for education. I consider myself so fortunate to live in a country that puts such a high priority on education. These days, it can be pretty easy to focus on all of the problems associated with our school system. Despite these shortcomings, however, many people who would never have received an education of any sort in other countries have an opportunity to advance themselves and their situation.
I am a big proponent for education, but I don’t believe that everyone is necessarily meant for college. Having two college degrees, one of which is in education, it is hard for me to say that. I tell my kids that I push strong for their education because education gives you options. Would I love my kids to be doctors, lawyers, etc? Of course! But, I don’t care if they want to spend the rest of their lives dressing hair or chopping down trees as long as they have the choice and are not stuck doing something that they do not love.
Even if they do choose to chop trees for a living, education gives them a chance to be the best that they can be and might give them better opportunities to open businesses of their own. What could I want more for my children than for them to be successful at something that they love?
Are you giving thanks for education this season? What do you like best about our system of education? What do you like least? Make sure you follow along and see what else I’m giving thanks for.
